June 6-8, 2008

Canaan Valley Resort & Conference Center

Davis, West Virginia

 Members and Friends,

Please join us for our Spring 2008 meeting at Canaan Valley Resort in Davis, West Virginia on the first weekend of June.  Quite a few years have passed since we met in this location and that was for a fall meeting, so we will have some new experiences seeing the Dolly Sods and Blackwater Falls areas during what is predicted to be peak bloom time.  Seeing these beautiful plants in their native, and frequently precarious, habitats - perched on massive rock outcroppings and clinging to steep slopes – is always breath-taking and amazing! The Canaan Valley Resort and Conference Center has been undergoing extensive renovations and now features a beautiful dining room with views of the valley and updated conference rooms.  The program will begin on Friday evening with regional expert William Grafton providing "An Introduction to the Dolly Sods Area" followed by the Spring Seedling Sale and Book Sale.  Saturday will be outdoors in Wild, Wonderful West Virginia with visits to the Dolly Sods area in the morning and Blackwater Falls in the afternoon.  Our lunch on Saturday will be a hamburger and hotdog cookout at the conference center.  Saturday evening will feature our second "Ribs & Bibs" buffet and we are very pleased to have Stephen Krebs from the Holden Arboretum as our evening speaker.  The weekend will conclude on Sunday morning with the Species Study group meeting and several options for tours on your own as you return home.

Some details for the weekend:

-       With the later meeting date, your have lots of time to pot up some choice seedlings and plant divisions from your garden to bring to the Seedling Sale.

-       The Flower Show will be able to feature some species and cultivars that are not normally ready for earlier shows, and we encourage both long-time exhibitors and first-time exhibitors to bring entries of azaleas, rhododendron and related species for the Show.

-       Note that there will not be any "facilities" on the bus or at Dolly Sods, so be prepared for a natural experience!

-       The Jolleys set a high standard for our "Ribs & Bibs" dinner dress at the Fall meeting, so pack your favorite jeans, bandannas and boots and be ready to join in the fun.

-       Evenings may still be cool in June in the mountains, so bring a sweater or jacket and comfortable walking/hiking footwear for Saturday's tours.

A detailed schedule of the weekend plans is enclosed along with the meeting registration, hotel registration information, and Flower Show rules.  **Please note the May 2, 2008 room reservation deadline to receive the special rates.**

Please pack your suitcases, travel over the mountains and through the woods, and join us on June 6-8, 2008 in Davis, West Virginia to experience "Getting Back to Our Roots".
